In today's tip and tricks section i am going to share with you a few tips on how you can backup a blogger blog.These tips are particularly useful especially if you post very regularly.

Why do i need to do this?

You might be thinking whats the need of having a copy of the backup,well the answer is simple.At times due to some unforeseen circumstances such as if your account gets hacked or your content/posts gets deleted for any reason,You might end up loosing posts that you would have written.Sounds Scary doesn't it?

That's the reason why we say precaution is better than cure.

How do i do this?

Thanks to the simplicity and the user friendliness of the blogger blogs,Google has made these steps very simple.All you need to do is

• Go to your blogger Dashboard
• Click on Settings
• Under other you will see an option called as export,Click on it.
• you will now see a download option.
• Click on download and you will then get a a copy of all the posts you have ever written.

I generally go through this process everytime i write a post just to be on the safe side and would request all of you reading this to download a copy of their blogs atleast once in three days

In today's tips and tricks section i am going to share with you a few tips on how you can add meta description on a blogger blog for better SEO.This function is not a very important factor in determining Google SERP rankings but helps a great deal in increasing the click through rate of a blog or a website.

So lets start with the tutorial.To add the meta tag follow the below steps.

• On your blog dashboard go to Settings-->Search Preferences-->Meta Tags-->Description (Click on Edit)
• Type in a a short snippet of your choice for your blog home page on this screen
• Click Yes radio button to enable search description
• Click Save

How to set this up for blog posts

• On the post edit screen on the right hand side below post settings,You will find an option called as search description
• Click on it and add a short snippet which tells a little bit about the post you are looking to publish..

Things to Consider

• Avoid Keyword stuffing
• Do not add the same snippet for more than one post
• Write something unique
• Write something which attracts the user to click on your website or a blog
• If using quotes within the snippet make sure not to include double quotes and use only single quotes or else Google might truncate the paragraph.
• Try to keep make sure to keep the snippet as simple as possible between 150-160 characters.

While you write a short snippet for your blog or posts make sure you write only 150-160 characters.Also another important thing to consider is to make sure you use the keywords you are targeting wisely and sprinkle it at the correct places within the short paragraph.

 

While it is Ok for you to not to add these meta tags,its always good if you make this as a practice and follow this just to make sure that your blog posts remain future proof.

An Alt tag which is an alternative text that is displayed to users who for some reason are unable to load images on their devices is a very important factor that contributes towards ranking.In today's tips and tricks section i will share with you a few simple tips on how to add alt tags to images.Its a very simple thing to do but goes a long way in ranking your post so read the next few lines carefully and make sure you implement this to every image you upload to your blog or a website.

Steps to add Alt images:

As i said earlier its very easy to implement this tag to an image that you upload on your website or a blog.All you need to do is go to the html editor section of the post you are creating and add the tag after <img which will be followed by ="(Your description of the picture)">

For example lets say i upload a picture of a lion running towards a deer,I would then add the attribute as <img alt="A lion hunting a deer" (This will be followed  by the other details of your image such as width,height,border etc)>

Its even more simple to add these tags to a blogger blog.All you need to do is click on the picture that you have uploaded on the post screen,select properties and enter an alt text of your choice and that's it.

Note:This is a very important aspect of SEO and goes a long way in improving the ranking of a website or a blog as the google bots cannot read a picture,they will however be able to read the alt text that will add value to the content you post.

Adding these tags is just another way of Google reminding all the webmasters that the content needs to be created keeping the users in mind.

How to use adwords keyword tool to target keywords

Adwords Keyword Tool - How to target Keywords

A few days back i posted a basic guide of how to do keyword research to increase traffic.Today,I will be sharing with you a few tips and tricks on how you can target Keywords using the Adwords Keyword tool.These tips will help you increase your website's SEO which will result in a boost in traffic.

To target keywords using the Adwords Keyword Tool you will need the following

• Google login credentials
• A list of keywords (Long Tail Keywords) you are trying to target
• A basic idea of what your post is going to be about

Once you have the above ready login to the adwords keyword tool,you will then see the following screen

All you need to do here is search for the word you are looking to target next to the box that says word or phrase.In the above example i have searched for Keyword Research which shows medium competition but has a global monthly search of 9,900 and local (USA) search of 3,600.

Keeping the above example in mind,Since the competition in the above search results is medium its better to add one or two more words to what you are targeting such as keyword research to increase traffic,Keyword research to boost traffic or something unique.Once you search for the terms i just described it will bring a list that shows the competition and amount local and global monthly searches that revolve around those long tail keywords.As i said in my earlier post it is always a wise idea to target long tail words to rank higher within the Google search results.

Points to remember while using Adwords Keyword Tools

• Make sure you have clicked on [exact] match on the left hand side of your screen before you have searched for the words you are trying to target
• Under Advanced Options and filters make sure that you filter the keyword search results to low competition and to show the results with more than 1000 and less than 60,000 queries per month.

I would love to say that's about it but there is a lot more to the research.Once you have the words you are happy with,You can proceed to the next step.

The word you have now done a research on will be your primary keyword.Now you need to search for the LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) words.

What is Latent Semantic Indexing?

Latent Semantic Indexing or LSI keywords are the words that are related to the primary word you are looking to target.For Example lets say you are looking to target a Cannon Camera,Your LSI keywords will then be Megapixels,Zoom in,Zoom out,Flash among other things related to the camera.Along with these basic LSI words you can think you you will also find a lot of LSI words on your adwords keyword tool below keyword ideas.

Try to maintain a word density of 1-3% and use a lot of LSI keywords within your post.Once you follow these steps Google will treat your content as a high quality one which will help you rank higher in the SERPS.Hope the tutorial of mine about Adwords Keyword tool will help you achieve higher ranking.

When a visitor visits a blog the first impression plays a very crucial role in whether they will return or not.When you have moved or deleted a page but have not done a custom redirect the visitors generally get the following message on the blog.

'Sorry, the page you were looking for in this blog does not exist'

When a message such as the one above welcomes the visitor when they are expecting to view the content they searched for,it is obviously not very good.The visitors will naturally get irked thinking that they will have to go through the whole process of searching once again for what they expected to find in your site.It's a webmaster or a blogger's job to make sure that the visitors are happy by either doing a custom redirect of the broken link or changing the Page not found error message altogether with something polite such as 

"I am Sorry,the page you are looking for either does not exist or might have been moved.Please use the search function on this site to search for the article or click on the homepage of my site for more"

A dream of every webmaster or a blogger is,has and will always remain having their website as the top result in Google Search.That being said,the main reason why everyone would love being on top of the search results is to see their site get a bulk of traffic.A very important factor before you can ace the search results is  doing a proper keyword research which is a practice followed by all the search engine optimization specialists.

Though the process of research looks a bit complicated its simpler than it sounds.There are a lot of free keywords tools which are available online through which you can easily target proper keywords based on the content you are working on.

Free Google Keyword tool

There are quite a few free tools which are available that help in finding the top keywords but when you ask any SEO experts you will find the most common one used is the Google Adwords tool.

To use the Google adwords tool all you need is to do is go to the Adwords login page and login with your Google credentials and search for words you are targeting.Please be aware that targeting words with low competition and one which is long will always be beneficial.I will be writing a full fledged post on how i use  Google Adwords tool for targeting soon.

Why Long Tail Keywords are better

While a single word can be targeted it is almost impossible to rank for it as the first result in Google.The ones who have already been ranking are there because of their backlinking strategy and because they have worked on the particular word for years through advertisements and probably hired an seo expert for the same as well.

For example if you are targeting a word called SEO,its always a better option if you look for something like seo optimization tips or seo tips and tricks etc.This will help you reduce the amount of competition as well as give you a good chance to get your website as the top result on Google for the keyword you have targeted.

Where should you use Keywords within a post or an article?

Once you have got the word you are looking to target,Make sure the keywords are located in the following places.

• Single H1 Tag
• H2 Tags
• First Paragraph
• Last Paragraph

Keyword Density

A very important factor to keep in mind is to make sure you do not stuff keywords that you are targeting within the post.Though many experts might say that the density no longer matters,its always advisable in keeping the density of keywords between 1-3%.

I use a free density tool called as Live Keywords Analysis which helps to copy the text i write into a free space and gives an idea of the density of the word i am trying to target.

Once you follow the above guide of how to do the research,You will realise that slowly your traffic is increasing.However bear in mind this will in no case happen over night.SEO is all about patience.Share your posts in Facebook,LinkedIn,Twitter and other social networking websites of your choice and wait for the post or the article to generate backlinks.This will definitely help your post,article reach heights and very close towards the top of the Google Search results if not on top.

How to install Google Analytics to a blogger blog or a website

Step by Step instructions on how to install Google Analytics

Its been quite a while since i have update the tips and tricks section within my blog.Today i will show you guys a simple guide on how you can install google analytics within your blog or a website.

Things you will need

• A Google account login information
• Access to the source code within your website or a blog

Before i get into the details let me tell you that the installation is not as complicated as it sounds.In fact its simpler than a lot of other things we do.

Ok,at this point i assume you already have a Google account user id and password.Once you do go to the Analytics Official website and login with your Google account credentials.

Once your logged in you will see the following screen

When you see the screen above,all you need to do is click on sign up.The signup if successful will give you an intimation that says success and will bring up the following screen.

Enter the details of the websites on the next page (as shown in the screenshot above) and based on your preference remove or let the tick mark remain below the Data Sharing settings options and click on get tracking code at the bottom of the same page (not shown in the screenshot above).

Your almost done.The next page will give you a tracking ID and a code.You can copy the script below the tracking code shown on the screenshot above and put it either above</head> or </body> tag within your HTML source code.I would advise you to have the code above the </Body> tag as this will help to maintain the speed of the site as the analytics code will load after the page has completed loading.

Analytics Features:

There are a lot of things you can do once you install Google Analytics such as measure the website's traffic,Statistics,Traffic sources and you also get an option which shows real time details of who at a given point of time are at your website.Apart from that measuring the site speed,keywords used by your websites visitors can also be seen through the tool.The best part of it all is its free.

Note:Those who use a Blogger blog will need to go to their Blogger dashboard-->Settings-->Other and at the bottom of the page next to Analytics Web Property ID will need to input the Tracking ID(an example of which can be seen in the screenshot above which shows the tracking ID as UA-39325107-1)

Note 2:Google Analytics Login can be used with the the same as your Gmail or Google Plus userid and password.

How to add Related Post Widget below each blog post

Many of you would have noticed in many blogs or websites(including mine)at the bottom of each post there are four related posts shown with thumbnails.As i said in one of my earlier posts this helps the visitor stay longer in the blog increasing the chances of a blog post becoming viral.

This will also give a good flexibility to the readers to read posts they might like without having to search or dig around the blog.

According to me there are two best websites that offer this widget for a blog which are

1. Nrelate
2. Linkwithin

The way you can add the widgets through these websites is pretty simple.All you need to do is register your web address and click on submit and a HTML code automatically gets generated through the sites.You can either copy the html code and paste it in the add new gadget container below your blog post in the layout field in the blog dashboard or more conveniently you can select the option on the website itself to add the code automatically without having to copy the code.

I use Nrelate on my blog because it gives great flexibility.There are range of options to choose from.You can select the layout of how you would like the related posts to show,how many posts you would like to display and also Nrelate looks to be more accurate in showing related posts.

How to fix 404 page not found crawl errors

Isn't it annoying when someone links to your page or a post and you end up finding out(through Google Webmaster Tools)that they have entered your link incorrectly on their website or blog causing you tons of crawl error messages?

This gets particularly annoying when there are a lot of links showing crawl errors.Since i have fixed my issue the below screen does not show errors but gives you an idea of the screen where you will see the crawl errors.

The main issue here is even though a webmaster is not at fault this problem arises at times.Lucky us,The fix is simpler than the problem.

let me give you an example of a 404 error i was getting

The actual link of my post was http://gamerzandwwe.blogspot.com/2012/09/ross-taylor-almost-pulls-off-thrilling.html

but one of my readers who wanted to point towards my link for some reason pointed it at the following link in his blog

http://gamerzandwwe.blogspot.com/2012/09/ross-taylor-almost-pulls-off-thrilling.html&sa=U&ei=_xuYUL_5EY6XiAfE5YCoDA&ved=0CJsBEBYwLg&usg=AFQjCNGJfxbAJiiAmpCH2auKzBhXc15CAA


What the incorrect link above did was that when my reader's blog(Who linked to the above post) was getting indexed Google ended up indexing this wrong link and showed it as a crawl error on my Google Webmaster Tools account.

What i did to fix this:

Creating a custom redirect is what needs to be done to fix issues such as this.All i did was went to the blogger dashboard-->Settings-->Search Preferences-->Custom Redirect as shown in the screenshot below.

Once i was in the custom redirect screen i clicked on New redirect and the following screen showed up.

After this i opened up the Google webmaster tools in another window and went to Google webmaster tools dashboard--->selected my website--->Crawl errors--->URL errors.


On the url error screen i could see the 404 error on the link http://gamerzandwwe.blogspot.com/2012/09/ross-taylor-almost-pulls-off-thrilling.html&sa=U&ei=_xuYUL_5EY6XiAfE5YCoDA&ved=0CJsBEBYwLg&usg=AFQjCNGJfxbAJiiAmpCH2auKzBhXc15CAA   

I copied the portion of the above link(/2012/09/ross-taylor-almost-pulls-off-thrilling.html&sa=U&ei=_xuYUL_5EY6XiAfE5YCoDA&ved=0CJsBEBYwLg&usg=AFQjCNGJfxbAJiiAmpCH2auKzBhXc15CAA  ) and pasted in next to "from" on the custom redirect screen and entered the correct link next to "To" as shown below

and then made sure i clicked on the tick mark next to permanent below and saved it.What this did is now whenever i go into the wrong link it redirects to the correct one.

You can follow the above procedure if you are facing the same problem.Once you do this you can also test the
error link and check if it is now redirecting towards the actual link on your blog or website.

Note:While entering the address for custom redirect your blog address will be prefilled all you need to enter is the portion after the blog address like in the example mentioned above i just input the line from /2012/09/ross-taylor-almost-pulls-off-thrilling.html&sa=U&ei=_xuYUL_5EY6XiAfE5YCoDA&ved=0CJsBEBYwLg...

How to add social networking slideouts on a blog

Today i am going to share with you a few tips on how you can add a few attractive social networking sliders such as Facebook,twitter, Google plus,YouTube and subscribe to your blog(as shown in the screenshot on the right hand side).These tabs show the profile you set(Like your Facebook page or your twitter user id etc)to your blog readers when they hover over it and looks quite attractive as well without taking up much space on the blog.There are two steps you need to follow to get this on your blog.

Step 1:

Go to your blogger dashboard-->Template--->Edit Html--->Proceed

Press the CTRL+F key which will open up the search box

Search for </head> tag and input the following code just above it.

Social Networking has taken the world by a storm and has proved to be one of the best ways to get traffic to your website.I will now share with you a few tips on how you can add the share buttons(In the picture shown below)below your blog title or below each of your blog posts.

To add the above sharing buttons all your need to do is go to 

Blogger dashboard---->Template---->Edit HTML---->Proceed---->Expand Widget Template

On this screen you will see HTML coding of your blog.Press CTRL+F key on your keyboard and a search box will open up.

Once you see a search box open up search for </head> and input the code that i have mentioned below just above </head> tag.

How to add a flying twitter bird to a blogger blog

Twitter along with Facebook have become the two hubs of social networking.They are the best tool for staying in touch with loved ones.That's not all,they also prove very beneficial in regards to getting traffic on a blog.Along with submitting Google and Bing sitemaps you can also add a twitter bird to your blog to increase your network and make a portion of the traffic permanent by bonding with your readers more closely.You might now have the following question.

So how do i add a twitter flying bird to my blog?

Its very simple all you need to do is first backup your template and then

Go to your dashboard-->template--->Edit Html as shown in the screenshot below

you will now see a screen with the html coding of your blog.For some this might look like Greek or Latin.

When you are in this screen press CTRL+F key together on keyboard after which you will see a search box appear on the screen.

Once you see a search box appear on your screen search for </body>.Once you find </body> above it input the following code replacing "yourtwitterhandle" highlighted in yellow with your twitter username.

How to submit a sitemap to Bing

 

A few days earlier i discussed how you can submit sitemap of your blogspot blog to google to get it indexed quickly.On this page i will cover how you can submit your sitemap to bing  so that along with Google you will also get good traffic from the search results on bing and yahoo(as search results for both have now merged).

To start off you will need to go to the bing webmaster tools here and then add your website after which you will need to verify it.

How to verify your website to index on bing?

When you enter your website in the big webmaster tools the first message you get will be to verify the website as shown in the screenshot below

 
On your blogspot blog on the dashboard click on edit html in the template section as shown in the screenshot below

You then need to add the<meta> tag containing the authentication code to the <head> section of the page so just search for the tag <head> and below it just input the code you can see on your verification screen on bing webmaster tools(You will see the code once you click verify now).The one below is just an example of the code.

Once you are done with the verification the other steps you need 

to follow are very Similar to how you added the sitemap for google 

all you need to do is once you are in your  bing webmaster tools 

dashboard click on submit sitemap and follow your blog 

address with the following in case your blog has below 500

posts. 

• atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500

For blogs with posts more than 500 but less than 1000 you can submit the following


For Blogs with posts more than 500 but less than 1000

• atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
• atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=500

For Blogs with posts more than 1000 but less than 1500

• atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500
• atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=501&max-results=500
• atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1001&max-results=500

An example incase if you are still confused: 


If your blog address is http://myblogaddress.blogspot.com follow it with one of the above based on the number of posts you have.For example for less than 500 posts http://myblogaddress.blogspot.com/atom.xml?redirect=false&start-index=1&max-results=500


Once your done with it the Bing bots will come to your blog and index all the pages.Bing has a reputation of being a bit slow so i would advise you to give it about 3 weeks and check the status once again.

PS:Incase you have already submitted your blog sitemap to google use the same sitemap for bing as well
